When she was a cub there was the darkness of the den
And mother’s warmth
The air outside was frozen, but she was safe from storms.
The day they left the den the light was blinding
She wrestled with her sister in the snow
And they walked a long time, mother hunted on the ice
Caught a seal and shared it with them both.
Ain’t it a shame?
The day her mother left, she was afraid, she thought she’d die
But on the third day after than she caught a seal, from then on she got by.
The day she met the Other, so unlike sister and mother
He’d disappear the way men always do
But something was different, she dug in for the winter
And the day her cub was born was the happiest she knew.
Ain’t it a shame?
Today the ocean shimmers, the warmest of the winters
The hunting hard, the thinness of the ice.
Oh, her sister’s drowned and dead, she couldn’t keep her cub fed
And she looks back the last one of her kind.
Ain’t it a shame?
